The hardest part of planning any trip is deciding where to go and in which order to do things. I have googled so many different itineraries to get ideas and read so many Lonely Planet books. My trouble is that I find something interesting in everything place that I read about! I know that I can’t go everywhere, as much as I want to, so narrowing things down is hard.
The criteria I use tends to be something like is:
It either has to have one huge thing (hello Siem Reap) or at least 3 other interesting things to do. Or a beach, I’m a sucker for a beach. It gets double points if there is a sunset and triple points for a sunrise.
It also has to be easy to get to from another place I’m going with a few accommodation options.
Here are a few itinerary ideas for South America:
Fly into Buenos Aires and travel across to Mendoza, then cross the border to Santiago. Travel north stopping at La Serena and San Pedro de Atacama. Read more about Chile here
Cross into Bolivia doing the Salar de Uyuni tour, travese through Bolivia via Potosi, Sucre, and La Paz. Stop off at Lake Titicaca and visit the Isla de Sol.
Avoid the scams and petty crime at the Peru border by taking the Bolivia Hop, and then visit Cusco for your trip to Machu Picchu. From here continue north via Arequipa, Paracas, Lima and Mancora.
Hop into Ecuador for Guayaquil, Puerto Lopez, cute dogs in Banos and fake equators in Quito. Read about that here
From Ecuador fly to Bogota and the land of pleasant surprises, polite old ladies and beach jungles. We recommend Bogota, Cartagena, Tayrona and Medellin. Read about our time in Colombia including Becca’s experience with the Colombian health care here
Don’t forget to visit Patagonia, maybe skip Uruguay and head straight to Brazil for Rio’s beaches and Iguzu Falls
South East Asia
Cambodia – head to Siem Reap, follow that up some French Colonial architecture in Battambang before catching some sun in Sihanoukville, and head to Phnom Penh to learn more about the tragic past of this country.
Once in Vietnam head straight to Ho Chi Minh City, then head north along the coast calling at Na Trang, Hoi An, Hue and finally Hanoi – the base for a trip to Halong Bay.
